100's of dogs in our local area are abandoned by their owners each year- they come into the stray pound and are looked after there, waiting and hoping that someone will come for them. The condition in which some of the dogs come in is absolutely heartbreaking.. They can be thin to the point of emaciation, covered in mange. One recent case was a little old Jack Russel terrier covered in tumours so sore and inflamed, some had burst open and were weeping, he came to us after his week in the stray kennels and lived for only 3 days. He had a happy 3 days of love, good food and a comfortable bed - how anyone could abandon an animal in that condition is beyond me. Then a tiny puppy covered in ticks, he was so anaemic he wasnt expected to live and spent days in the vets on a drip. The owners of these dogs should hang their heads in shame.
No dog that comes in as a stray dog is turned away by us,young, old, big, small, weak or strong, each dog is loved and cared for . Any dog that is sick or injured receives the very best of veterinary care. We do our very best to find suitables homes for all our dogs. If a dog is elderly or not in good health then we place them in a permanent foster home and cover their veterinary costs for the rest of their lives. We pledge a lifetime commitment to our dogs - we will always be there for them - never again will they have no-one to look out for them.
Pictured here are just a few of the dogs that were abandoned in our area last year. We at HWAR employ a non destruct policy but throughout the UK last year 9,500 healthy dogs were put to sleep because homes couldnt be found for them.
